Sembawang New Town Sembawang New Town got its name from the Sembawang tree. During the colonial era, the area was home to a major British naval base. Many bungalows in the area were home to British naval officers and till today, continue to retain much of their colonial architectural influences. Several road names in the area, such as Falkland, Montreal, King’s Avenue, reflect their British origins. At present, Sembawang New Town is a major port with Sembawang Wharves handling large volumes of commodities cargo. Located at the Northern-most tip of Singapore, Sembawang is bounded by the Johor Straits to the north; Simpang to the east, Yishun New Town to the southeast, Mandai to the south and Woodlands New Town to the southwest. The Sembawang MRT Station functions as a central hub around which commercial outlets and recreational facilities have sprung up. Sun Plaza and Sembawang Shopping Centre (due to open during the last quarter of 2008) are strategically located near the MRT station.
Several notable attractions are located in the area. These include Singapore’s only hot spring, Sembawang Hot Spring; Bottle Tree Village, an idyllic park famed for its Bottle Trees flown in from
Queensland, Australia; and Sembawang Park, a 15 ha haven for nature lovers, campers and families looking to escape from the concrete jungle.
