A team of interior experts – seven architects and 13 artists to be exact – were enlisted to design the hippest new hotel in the Inner West, where each room is completely different to the next.
The Collectionist, a new 39-room hotel in leafy Camperdown, boasts a unique concept that’s totally new for the Sydney hotel scene.
Guests are not able to choose from pre-allocated rooms online, rather they’re invited to wander through the corridors on arrival and explore the individually designed rooms that are available (read – the ones that have the door open!) before choosing a favourite and settling in for the night.
The whole process is managed through an online check-in system: First up, a pin number grants you access to the hotel from the street. From here, guests spend time inspecting the available rooms in their selected category – and the various layouts, designs and furnishings on offer.
Once a room is chosen, the guest needs to send an SMS or an email to alert staff of their room choice, before another pin is generated via email or text for access to the room. How very 007.
While the rooms have no TVs, each space offers an ensuite and kitchenette complete with a Nespresso coffee machine. Some even boast balconies and outdoor terraces.
To ensure guests are treated to a truly unique experience, a team of architects, interior designers and artists were enlisted to create each individual room in the three-level structure.
Notable creatives behind the designs include Andrew Cliffe from The World is Round; Yasmine Ghoniem and Katy Svalbe from Amber Road; Matt Sheargold and Susie Willis from Willis Sheargold; and Josh Cain and Lily Goodwin from Pattern Studio.
There’s the Malmo room – a predominantly millennial pink space with Scandi finishes that will no doubt appeal to the Instagram-obsessed bunch; the Rita – a luxurious, Italianate-style room with marble and terrazzo detailing; and The Den – moody, bachelor pad-inspired digs featuring dark mahogany panelling and brown leather cushions.

Whether you’re on the hunt for an adventurous staycation, visiting Sydney or are looking for some quirky inspiration for your next reno, a stay at The Collectionist will no doubt recharge your creative batteries.
Rates range from AUD$200 to AUD$260 a night – but you might want to block out a whole month to see each room in all its glory.
Put in that leave stat, people!
