With all the disruptive renovation works going on, you might end up having nowhere to sleep, eat, cook or even relieve yourself properly. To avoid all these nightmares, here’s how to get yourself well-prepared!

Step 1: Set the game plan
There could probably be, say, over a hundred tasks to be done for your renovation. And there will be days where you need to be around to inspect the work, shop for furniture with the renovator, or move away your old furniture. So, to start off with the basics, you’ll need a game plan that details out your timeline, schedule, budget, selection of renovators and home design. It might sound tough, but this guide should help you get started in no time!

Step 2: Find a temporary place to stay
When you’re setting your game plan, be sure to consider that, unlike new homes, renovating an existing home means you need to consider where to temporarily store your home furnishings and whether you can continue staying in the house during the renovation works. With all the noise and dirt created from your renovation works, you probably wouldn’t want to be staying full time at home. So, before your renovation starts, make a run for it. Not just yourself, but your pets, plants and furniture too. Move out to another place, be it a staycation or a friend’s house, where you can manage the renovation without having to camp there uncomfortably.
Renovation can get noisy and dusty. Be sure to either find an alternative place to stay, or at least keep your renovation works partitioned.

Step 3: Store your furniture away
And, the next step is about solving one of the most common cause for concern – your existing furniture at home. You wouldn’t want them to get dirtied or damaged by the ongoing renovation works. Neither would you want them to be obstructing the progress of your renovation. So, the easiest solution is, of course, to store them temporarily at self-storage facilities that can do the safekeeping for you. When selecting your storage solution, be sure to consider the following:
– Location of facility
– Price of storage
– Flexibility of storage terms
– Transportation and packing services provided
– Trustworthiness (You wouldn’t want your fragile items to be stored broken, right?)

Step 4: Pack it up, clean it off
And if you do decide to move away for some time, or keep your bulky furniture stored away somewhere, you will surely need to pack your things up and get things cleaned, before renovation can begin. This is probably the most boring part of renovation that we all hate doing. Thankfully though, for everything you hate doing, there will be people willing to do it for you, and usually for not too big a price. (P.S. There are plenty of cleaners, packers and movers in the market, so do keep a look out if you need them!)

Step 5: Safety precautions are a must!
But in all cases, it is always best to leave no valuable items in the house and keep a note on who you’ve authorized to enter the premises of your home. One safety precaution is to use digital/number pad locks, instead of locks with keys. This way, once your renovation is over, you can just change your lock security number, without having to worry someone else is holding on to a duplicated key.

Step 6: Re-decorate your home
Last but not the least, you would also need to consider if you can reuse any of the old furnishings, or if you need new furnishings to match up to the new home design. When refurnishing your home, remember that one of the easiest way to cut your renovation/decoration costs is to focus more on getting off-the-shelf products and less on customized products or carpentry works!
