How to get rid of stale fridge smells with one ingredient

Are your excessive leftovers or old fruit and veg ruining your fridge’s MOJO, creating a smell that lingers all through the house?

Here’s how to get rid of stale fridge smells for good.

If you have tons of leftovers, half wrapped avocados, 1/3 packets of rice and all the rest jamming up your fridge shelves then you likely would have noticed some pretty nasty, unwelcome smells coming from this area of your kitchen.

We asked our cleaning expert, Mike Brooke, for his top tips on how to get rid of those horrible fridge smells. The secret ingredient? Bi-carb (baking) soda.

Step 1: Remove all food items

Remove all items – both perishable and non-perishable – from the fridge.

Then remove all the trays, ensuring any old veg and fruit is put into compost or thrown immediately.

Step 2: Clean fridge with baking soda

You’ll need to give the fridge a good, thoroughly clean and wipe it down accordingly to remove any lingering smells.

The trick here is to sprinkle some baking soda onto a cloth and wipe down the fridge shelves.

This will deodorize the fridge leaving it smelling nice and fresh.

Step 3. Thoroughly wipe down the fridge

Give the whole fridge a thorough wipe down using the cloth that you have applied bi-carb onto. Continue to sprinkle extra baking soda onto the cloth if you feel it’s necessary to give the fridge a solid clean.

Place a bowl with baking soda in the empty fridge and leave it to sit overnight to continue to work its magic and deodorize the fridge.

Step 4. Return all food items

Place food items back once you have cleaned your fridge and the smell has been removed.
