Resident's view: Choa Chu Kang

Nov 28, 2011 - By: Sheena Chua
According to housewife Huang Siew Ching, you get what you pay for when buying property. The Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1 resident gives us the lowdown on the estate.

(Our Choa Chu Kang resident reveals that while her estate has the basic facilities like a good public transport system covered, there is nothing much to do around the area. Image courtesy of Terence Ong.)

iProperty: Why did you choose to live in this area?
Huang Siew Ching: 22 years ago when I was looking for a new flat, Choa Chu Kang was one of the few estates with access to an MRT station, basic shopping facilities as well as schools. About nine years later we moved to our current place in Avenue 1. We wanted to remain in the estate because we were happy and comfortable with it. Besides, it was much less expensive than everywhere else.

iP: What are the pros of living in this area?
HSC: Overall, I like Choa Chu Kang for its quiet serenity, as it is cut off from the hustle and bustle of the city. My place is a 10-minute walk and a five-minute bus ride to Choa Chu Kang MRT, LRT and bus interchange, as well as Lot 1 Shoppers’ Mall.

iP: Are there any negatives about living in this area?
HSC: The down side is that Choa Chu Kang is so far away from everywhere else. Travelling anywhere central by public transport would require at least 45 minutes. It is also an old estate, so facilities and the design of HDB flats are quite behind other estates.

iP: If there was one thing (or more than one) that would improve this area, what would you like to see?
HSC: I’d appreciate quicker or shorter routes to the city to cut down travelling time. There aren’t many good restaurants in the area, so more of those would be fantastic.

iP: Would you advise people to move to this area and why / or why not?
HSC: No. Houses in the area may be generally cheap, but the distance from the Central Business District area is enough to be a deal-breaker.

iP: What is your favourite place for dinner in the area and why?
HSC: Lot 1 has good Japanese outlets like Sakae Sushi and MOF.

iP: Do you have a local bar or pub and what’s good about it?
HSC: There are no such places in Choa Chu Kang, to my knowledge. When we’re in a celebratory mood, we make our own drinks at home.

iP: Where do you do your shopping and why?
HSC: The NTUC FairPrice at Lot 1 is probably the biggest; it also a larger variety of groceries.

iP: Are there any special finds in the area?
HSC: Unfortunately, I don’t think there are such finds in this estate. This area is not very modern.
