A New Centre for the Community

May 09, 2011 - Sheena Chua
A fully integrated sports hub perches proudly just 10 minutes away from Cashew Heights. The newly opened Senja-Cashew Community Centre (CC) is also just a stone’s throw away from a park, a pond and a mall – making literally everything at residents’ doorsteps.

(A new centre for the community in Bukit Panjang.)

With a gross floor area of almost 7,000 sqm, the new CC is located opposite Bukit Panjang Plaza (home to popular tenants such as Starbucks, The Body Shop and Daiso), and overlooks Pang Sua pond. The area boasts facilities for sports, entertainment, dining and shopping.

The CC’s sports facilities include an eight-lane Olympic-sized swimming pool, a playground with water features, a sports hall, a street football court and a gymnasium. And with brand new facilities come brand new responsibilities. The CC is now piloting a new community management model that manages its sports and recreation facilities as well – a job that the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) is currently doing for other sports and recreation centres. Hailing it as a “trend-setting model of the future”, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan explained to The Straits Times that the new model would promote a greater sense of ownership among the community.

The CC was officially opened on Sunday by Dr. Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, as well as Minister of Parliament for the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, where the CC is located. When asked by a reporter if the CC was strategically launched in timed for the upcoming general elections, Dr. Balakrishnan laughed it off and denied it. “The timing is because it took us this long to get everything from the drawing board to where we are now.” He added that the idea for the location of the sports-hub-cum-CC came from residents during a block visit some five years ago. “This town has been transformed over the last decade, and we are continuing the transforming, making it a town people can be proud of.”
