It seems to be that areas where can residents not only live but also work is becoming more common across Asia. These integrated communities are classed by The Straits Times as “sophisticated and cost-efficient business spaces”. Examples are already springing up across Asia: Changi City @ Changi Business Park and Fusionopolis, both here in Singapore; Dalian Ascenda IT Park in China; and Ascenda OneHub Gurgaon in India. It seems as though there is a demand for people living and working within the same area. Aylwin Tan, chief customer solutions officer of Ascendas said to The Straits Times that “the demand for lower cost accommodation near to where people work will be key [in the future]”. However, these projects will not just place residential and commercial segments next to each other. Mr Tan explains further by saying (to The Straits Times) that they will be “human-centric masterplans that facilitate and promote interaction. We envision business space as vibrant unique environments that fully integrate business, lifestyle, hospitality and other elements”. Also speaking to The Straits Times, United Engineers head of property, David Liew, said that business areas in the future will now be greatly influenced by the idea of a “live-work-play” environment. “Residential, recreational and work and business spaces will merge within a hub”, Mr Liew continued. “The future of urban planning will probably allow a person to live near of within a hub – where his or her office, favourite restaurants and cafes, yoga class and gym, supermarket and all are located within.” The idea behind this is to create a workforce that is happier with their overall quality of life, causing them to work better and whilst still enjoying their lives. Mr Liew said that “changing demographic and social trends are causing a greater demand for work-life balance. As such, business space providers should no longer just look at providing work spaces and business premises, but more so, creating lifestyles”.
