Moving home can be one of the most stressful experiences of your life. Here are iProperty.com Singapore’s tips and tricks on making your move as hassle free as possible.

Choosing Movers Get a quote from a number of different moving companies – at least two or three – so that you can compare prices. Note that some moving companies calculate their rates in different ways, so be sure that you understand what you are getting for that price. Remember, while price is important, so is service. Try and get a testimonial from someone who has used that company’s services before. Bear in mind that if you approach the company, they are unlikely to direct you to someone with any negative opinions about their services.
Packaging If packing valuable or breakable goods, you will need good quality packaging material. Pack breakables in bubble wrap, and make sure that the movers wrap all furniture securely in corrugated cardboard. The corners of tables and other large wooden furniture pieces should be especially reinforced, as they are most susceptible to impacting and damage.
You should also consider putting silica gel in with clothes and other goods that are susceptible to damage from humidity, such as mould, especially if you’re going to keep them in storage for any length of time.
Always be present when the packers are there. This way you can offer advice if there is anything especially delicate or if the movers need to take extra special care with a particular item.
There is also the issue of security, as your door is likely to be open for most of the day and it is not the mover's responsibility to know who is allowed to come into your home.
Electronics Electronic goods are especially susceptible to breaking. Try and put electronic items in their original packaging, and it is also good idea to crate them as well. If you’re moving anything that has data on it, back up the information, as most insurance policies do not cover data loss.
Pets Some movers are set up to handle moving pets, but most will ask that you are responsible for transporting your animals. Dogs are relatively hassle free, but cats should be placed into a carrying basket. It is generally a good idea to put your pet into a closed room in your new home along with some familiar items, as they may become distressed if in unfamiliar surroundings.
Insurance Most moves will incur at least some damage or breakage to goods. Consider what definitely needs to be insured and what you can accept breakage on, as insuring everything is expensive. Insure valuables, objects of sentimental value, and any items that are likely to incur damage. A transit insurance policy – a policy that covers any damage incurred while moving, and covers everything including mould, damp damage, electrical malfunctions, etc, begins at 3.25%.
Keep a detailed record of each item insured – with a value for individual items as well as the total amount. Keep all your insurance documents and make sure that you claim for any damages before the statute of limitations expires.
