Back to nature

Jun 05, 2010 - The Straits Times

Elegant simplicity as well as practical and efficient space planning are the foundation of Collective Designs' works. This 10,000 sq ft house in the Meyer Road area exemplifies its design philosophy.

Exuding an earthy, laidback vibe, the three-generational home is an airy, light-filled haven for the seven family members who occupy it. Principal designer Selina Tay says: 'The house was designed to have a lot of light and natural materials.'

To bring out the natural theme, she made generous use of organic materials. The living room feature wall is made from pieces of stone, while the dining room and staircase feature wood panelling along one wall.

To enhance the sense of openness and to make the most of the light entering the house, a full-height glass panel replaced a stair railing and reflective mirrors were installed in the wood-panelled wall between the dining room and kitchen.

Ms Tay says: 'One of the challenges we faced was to fit everything into the kitchen as the owners, who are avid cooks, have a lot of kitchen equipment.'

With clever space planning, the kitchen maintains its expansive feel even with all the state-of-the-art equipment installed. An island counter provides ample space for food preparation and a place to have simple meals.

In the master bedroom, which has a high ceiling, luxury rules. A spiral staircase leads to a loft-cum-study while a long walk-in wardrobe provides ample space for clothes.

The master bathroom, which is Ms Tay's favourite space in the house, is large, with sumptuous-looking shiny black granite flooring complementing the earthy feel of the rest of the house. A free-standing bathtub on a timber-decked platform completes the spa-like ambience of the bathroom.
