Singapore to go underground for more space
Committee recommends developing underground land banks near transport hubs
Feb 04, 2010 - iProperty.com

To deal with the expected shortage of land in Singapore in future, the Economic Strategies Committee (ESC) recommends going underground and carving out new land spaces.

Largely located near transport hubs on the surface, ESC thinks the Government should develop these land banks for eventual industrial use. According to Senior Minister of State for National Development Grace Fu, the Government found a lot of potential to create infrastructure underground while developing the MRT system.

Although the Government is not likely to develop such land banks anytime soon, the idea to use underground land banks for certain industries is a viable option. Already, JTC Corporation has started developing the first phase of an underground oil storage facility on Jurong Island.
